When you leave a space,
something else takes it over
And Eventually plants push through the concrete elements
Â
Uteliaat kukat kurkkii (eng. Curious Flowers Peeking) is a site-specific installation that was inspired by the potential history of the gallery building and the Nikkilä area. I approached the subject from the perspective of a sexual minority and created an alternative present for this former psychiatric hospital laundry room.
While making the exhibition, I played around with the idea of an abandoned space: who will occupy it first; and who will take over when the last human has left? The fictitious space of my exhibition has been shaped by erosion and homosion, nature grows in through the cracks of the structures and curious flowers are peeking in to see what is happening or has happened inside.Â
